Empower Bi-Visibility: Celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week

From 16th to 23rd September, we observe Bi Visibility Week, a time to honour and recognise the diverse community of individuals worldwide who identify as bisexual. Understanding what it means to be bisexual and how to support the bisexual community is crucial, and this article aims to shed light on these topics.

The term 'bisexual' is an inclusive term that refers to individuals who experience romantic or sexual attraction to more than one gender. This identity encompasses a spectrum of terms and experiences, including but not limited to 'bisexual,' 'pansexual,' and 'queer.' It's important to acknowledge that there is no singular way to embody a bisexual identity; it is as varied as the individuals themselves.

Bisexuality is not limited by gender identity; it includes transgender individuals, including those who are non-binary, as well as cisgender and asexual individuals. However, despite the inclusivity of the bisexual community, they face significant challenges due to biphobia—the fear or dislike of those who identify as bisexual based on prejudiced attitudes and beliefs. This discrimination can be directed at individuals who are openly bisexual or those perceived to be so.

Stereotypes about bisexual individuals are pervasive and damaging, often portraying them as indecisive, promiscuous, or dishonest about their sexual orientation. Media representation is scarce and frequently perpetuates these negative stereotypes, further marginalizing bisexual individuals, particularly those who also belong to other marginalized groups, such as disabled individuals, people of colour, or transgender individuals.

The impact of biphobia is profound and far-reaching. According to reports, bisexual individuals are less likely to be open about their sexual orientation in various aspects of life, including family, education, workplace, and religious communities. This concealment is only a fraction of the broader picture.

The bisexual community faces disproportionately high rates of hate crimes, intimate partner violence, discrimination in healthcare settings, and mental health challenges. Alarmingly, a significant percentage of bisexual men, women, and non-binary individuals report experiencing these issues.

As we celebrate Bi Visibility week, it is imperative to not only celebrate the bisexual community but also to commit to educating ourselves, challenging biphobic attitudes, and advocating for equitable representation and treatment of bisexual individuals in all spheres of life. It is a call to action for allies and members of the community alike to foster a more inclusive and supportive society.
